Bring a museum collection to life
Animate a painting or turn a historic photograph into a short scene: that is the challenge in GIF IT UP 2026. Europeana announced the thirteenth edition of the competition on October 1, with entries open throughout the month.
The competition invites people to turn works from open-access cultural collections into GIFs. This year brings categories devoted to science and audiovisual heritage, along with a special prize for educators.
Check the artwork’s details before you begin
You can submit up to three GIFs, each no larger than 2 MB. Entry is free, and every submission must include links to the original materials. Use works from the eligible collections and check that they are in the public domain or have a license that permits reuse.
Entries made entirely or mainly with generative AI are not accepted. If you use it to help, you must disclose that. Europeana provides links to tutorials and examples from previous competitions to make it easier to get started.
