In brief

  • The total covers August 24 through October 18, 2026.
  • Downloads do not represent unique users or confirmed switches from other software.
  • The official download page lets you choose an operating system and architecture.

More than a million downloads a week

On October 21, The Document Foundation reported 9.4 million LibreOffice downloads between August 24 and October 18. Downloads have exceeded one million a week since the 26.8 series was announced, up from a rate that had approached but not reached that mark.

The total does not include Windows updates, which are counted separately, or downloads of older versions. It is a sign of activity around the project, but it does not tell us how many people use the suite every day.

Downloads do not tell us who switched

The statistics are anonymous, and the foundation acknowledges that they cannot explain why downloads have grown. Website visits should not be confused with completed downloads either.

Calling this 9.4 million new users or switches from another application would go beyond the evidence. A download records an action, not a person’s or company’s final decision about which software to use.

What you can try now

The official website offers LibreOffice 26.8.1 for Windows, macOS and Linux. The 26.8 series adds Markdown import and export, connectors for objects in Writer and between cells in Calc, and performance improvements. The software is free; the page we reviewed does not mention a phased rollout or restrictions for Mexico.

The suite includes Writer for documents, Calc for spreadsheets, Impress for presentations and other tools. If you want to try it, we recommend starting with copies of the files you normally use and checking their formatting before replacing your current software. That test will tell you more than download figures alone.
