In brief
- Hero Links keeps the same address when permissions change.
- OneDrive brings together SharePoint libraries and shortcuts to shared content.
- The announced sync requirements differ from those on the support page we reviewed.
A link you do not have to replace
On October 20, Microsoft announced OneDrive features aimed at an everyday task: finding and sharing a document without getting lost in folders and permissions. Hero Links, now rolling out, give each file or folder a single default link. Change who can access it, and the address stays the same.
For a team, this can save time hunting for the message with the right link. But it also makes it important to review permissions when the team changes. Keeping the same address is convenient; deciding who can open it is still the owner’s responsibility.
Easier access to team libraries
The new libraries view brings links to SharePoint sites together in OneDrive, including recent sites, favorites and sites associated with Teams. Microsoft also announced search for libraries and lists, plus a Shortcuts folder for organizing links to shared content.
For anyone moving between projects, the benefit is a familiar starting point. Before adding every available folder, choose the ones you actually use. A useful shortcut saves you a search instead of becoming another item to organize.
One million items, with a caveat
The announcement describes syncing up to one million items on Windows and macOS with at least 8 GB of RAM. However, the support page we reviewed still describes a Windows preview requiring 16 GB of RAM and an SSD. The two official sources give different requirements.
Do not reorganize a huge library on the assumption that the higher limit is already available. Check the version and requirements that apply to your computer. Microsoft says some features will arrive over the coming months; the announcement does not confirm they will be enabled for every account at once.
