What was released

WordPress released version 7.1.4 on October 28, 2026, and recommends updating for security reasons. The announcement covers several fixes, including a weakness in the upgrade process and issues that allow malicious content to be stored. This is not the launch of WordPress 7.2.

Check the installation, not just the announcement

For a blog owner, the useful step is to check which version the site actually runs. The announcement says the update can be started from the dashboard and that sites supporting automatic updates will begin the process in the background. A new release being available does not prove it is already installed on your server.

A practical check

If someone else maintains the site, ask them to confirm the version and their post-update checks, rather than simply saying it is done. Keep a recoverable backup and then check the pages and functions you regularly use. A page loading does not prove that a form or purchase works.

The notice also mentions fixes for eligible older branches, rolling out as they become ready. That should not be read as full, indefinite support: WordPress says only its latest version is actively supported.
