In brief

  • The control is enabled in Nightly 160.
  • The announcement is not a stable-channel release.

The feature is still in testing

On October 22, Mozilla said Nightly 160 enables playback speed controls in Picture-in-Picture by default. This is the small video window that can stay visible while you switch tabs. The announcement credits contributor Simon Rosen for most of the initial work.

What it changes when following a tutorial

Picture-in-Picture already lets you detach a video from its webpage, move the window and resize it. Firefox’s documentation explains that you can open it using the button that appears when you hover over a supported video.

The new control addresses a familiar annoyance: when an explanation is too fast or too slow, adjusting its pace in the floating window saves you from finding the original tab again. That describes the benefit, not a promise that every player or service will behave identically.

A test feature is not a security patch

If you use stable Firefox and cannot see the option, this announcement does not mean your installation is broken. Nightly is for testing changes; there is no need to switch channels just for this feature.

Keeping your everyday browser updated remains a separate task. A player improvement and a security update can arrive on different dates and release channels, so check which one you are installing.
