In brief
- The announcement was published October 23; rollout began October 16.
- The control changes the speed of a clip in your project.
- Check that the result remains clear, not just shorter.
Set the pace in the editor
Google announced a new playback-speed control for individual Google Vids clips on October 23, 2026. The range runs from 0.25× to 2×, letting you stretch an action or shorten a sequence without leaving the editor.
This changes a clip within your edit. It is not the same as choosing a faster viewing speed while watching a video: you are setting the pace of that section in your project.
Change the speed for a reason
Imagine a tutorial with a long wait between two steps. Speeding up that pause could keep the explanation moving; slowing down a quick gesture could make it easier to follow. As a simple calculation, a 20-second clip at 2× takes 10 seconds.
There is no need to adjust every shot. Before exporting or sharing, play the entire sequence and check that the instructions still make sense. Pay particular attention to any speech, small text or subtitles in the affected section. Saving a few seconds is not helpful if viewers miss the point.
Your account may still be waiting
Google says the gradual rollout started on October 16 for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, with up to 15 days for completion. The announcement covers Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal Google accounts.
That does not mean every account has the control already. Vids creation and editing happen on a computer, while viewing is also available on mobile devices. Check your own editor before planning work that depends on the new control.
